Precision Farming
What is Precision Farming?
Depending on where you look you will find many different answers to this. Below is a summary:

Precision Farming is farming with the use of GPS and specialised equipment in order to accurately place the correct quantities of a product in the correct place. Also the collecting of crop and paddock spatial information for the purpose better decision making and crop management.

The broad purpose of Precision Farming is to reduce input costs and increase overall crop quality.

What are some of the benefits of adopting Precision Farming?
  • Reduce input costs.
    1. Less Overlap means product such as seed, fertiliser and chemical isn't wasted by applying to already treated soil
    2. Less Skips means that the full capacity of the paddock is used and reduced bare soil that can be exposed to erosion and weeds.
    3. Pulling Tillage in a straight line reduces engine load and hence fuel usage

  • The machine can be driven in the paddock at any time of the day or night as well as in weather conditions such as rain and fog with the knowledge that the paddock will be covered fully. This means that chemical can be applied at the time of the day when it will be most effective.

  • Reduce Driver Fatigue. By reducing the need to concentrate so hard on keeping the machine online means that a driver is less fatigued after a long period of time in the cab.

  • Less experienced drivers can be used. With a lack of skilled operators available, knowing that the job will get done well with a less experienced driver is a welcome relief

  • Reporting of Paddock Sizes and Farm activity can be largely automated. Most Precision Farming products will allow the creation of a report which can be used for a wide range of purposed from Farm Management to Quality Assurance reporting.

  • A Precision Farming System can pay for itself in less than 2 years.
